From perfume, towards the colour of your shirt, right as a result of the smelliness of your respective feet, mosquitoes manage to find any reason to sink themselves into human skin.
Scientists state that stinky feet and socks may be added to the list of factors that attract 腳臭 to give off human blood. One African scientist is currently using that little research to help fight malaria in Tanzania by creating traps that provide off, hoping to lure the bloodsuckers that carry the illness to their hosts.
“Scientists have known for some time that mosquitoes smell people; which they will not see us, but rather they smell us,” wrote Dr. Fredros Okumu within an email from Tanzania where he heads the investigation project at the Ifakara Health Institute. “This is the things which we produce within our breath, sweat of skin that [mosquitoes] use like a signal to discover us. If you are wearing socks, these skin-derived chemicals remain on the sock fabric and may still be detected by mosquitoes even once you have removed your socks.”
Okumu’s project received a $775,000 grant today from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Grand Challenges Canada to fund the traps and help further development.
But unclean feet and dirty socks aren’t the only real things which entice a mosquito to visit set for the kill. Experts point out that Limburger cheese has also been found being appealing to certain mosquito populations. Ned Walker, a professor within the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics at Michigan State University, studies mosquitoes extensively. Walker said that anything from body build to the type of perfume you wear can be the difference between deterring and attracting the pests.
“You will find a variation among attraction to different people … Men are certainly more attractive because they are generally larger than women,” said Walker, adding the floral scents given off by deodorants and perfumes also attract some varieties of mosquitoes on the skin.
However, determining why some people leave a picnic covered in bites and some escape without a battle wound continues to be up for debate.
“There are some [species] that are appealing to the odors in humans. But what we would like to know is the reason some mosquitoes are attracted to birds and never mammals, to some subsets of humans yet not all humans. It is an active area of research,” said Walker.
Joe Conlon, technical adviser in the American Mosquito Control Association, said genetics in addition to fair skin may also play a role in popular with mosquitoes, although scientists remain dexrpky21 whether or not the bites are merely more noticeable on individuals with fair skin.
And even though fair skin is much more appealing to the insects, lighter colors of clothing turn them off.
“It’s prudent to dress in light-colored clothing. There exists a preference by some species to get drawn to darker colors… Wear loose fitting clothing. Mosquitoes can and will bite through tight-fitting clothing,” he stated.
Conlon said that the only real surefire way of preventing from biting would be to wear a repellant, to look at what clothes you wear and to remove standing water that collects in places like on the bases of flower pots and in the bottom of air conditioner drip pans.
He also cautioned against using any substitutes to 除臭襪 like vitamin b complex, proclaiming that double blind tests have proven these remedies to not work effectively.
“Oftentimes, people are not fearful enough. With West Nile Virus falling the radar, folks are less concerned. … People need to [know] that they cannot just ruin your picnic, they may ruin your lifestyle,” said Conlon.
